Abstract

This paper reports on the use of online blogs to promote student participation in the learning of the cultural aspects of international business. The focus is to report on a course that was conducted with forty‐two Masters of Business Administration (MBA) students from the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile. Examples from student posts, comments, and projects in the blog suggest an increased participation and interaction among the members of the class and a successful implementation of the blog features.

Abstract

The object of this brief paper is to discuss the balance between business content and language proficiency in study abroad programs related to business. When blending these three activities, the challenge is to balance each appropriately. If the study abroad experience contains little or no business content, students lose out on the opportunity to learn elements of international business. If the study abroad experience contains little or no language content, students miss out on the cultural integration that is essential for international interactions. And if “study abroad” becomes too loose (i.e. party on the beach) or too rigid (i.e. no different than taking classes back home), students miss the essence of studying in a foreign location. Of course, there are excellent business study abroad programs that are conducted in English (e.g. see Keillor & Emore for the roundtable discussion regarding English language programs). The focus of this paper is the role of foreign language instruction and student proficiency in foreign language, as it relates to business study abroad programs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of an integrated framework suitable for preliminary airframe design, called PyPAD (Python module for Preliminary Aircraft Design), providing the capability to define models to compute loads and to perform the structural sizing.

Design/methodology/approach

The modules developed until now allow for the definition of multi-fidelity aero-structural models starting from a Common Parametric Aircraft Configuration Schema (CPACS) input file and to compute static loads (trim) and flutter margin with minimum user effort. PyPAD take advantages of Abaqus-CAE, and the main functions are developed in Python, to take advantages of the simplicity in terms of software development and maintenance, but the core routines are developed in Fortran, taking advantages of parallel programming to get the best performances.

Findings

A complete test case, starting from the CPACS input and ending with the definition of structural, aerodynamic and aero-elastic models, with the computation of different design loads, is reported. An example will show that the framework developed is able to handle different problematics of the preliminary projects using quite complex global models.

Practical implications

All the tools developed in the framework, and the ones currently under development, could be a valid help during the preliminary design of a new aircraft, speeding up the iterative process and improving the design solution.

Originality/value

PyPAD is the first framework developed around Abaqus-CAE for the preliminary aircraft design and is one of the few tools looking at the different problematics involved in a preliminary airframe design: design, loads and aero-elasticity, sizing and multi-disciplinary optimization.

Abstract

Purpose

A key factor adversely affecting contractor social networking performance is the improper handling and information management of contractor’s services delivery on websites. Contractor social networking is particularly problematic on industrialised building system (IBS) infrastructure maintenance projects where contractor’s certified quality product and firms are not matched with maintenance specialisation services. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reports on the early stages of research which is developing a new information and communications technology (ICT)-based approach to managing contractor social networking on IBS infrastructure maintenance schemes. As a precursor to this work, the paper reviews current contractor social networking websites practices on IBS infrastructure maintenance projects and explores the ICT tools and techniques currently being employed on such projects.

Findings

The findings reveal the need for more sophisticated contractor social networking websites solutions which accord with the needs of IBS infrastructure maintenance schemes.

Originality/value

The paper concludes by presenting a research framework for developing such a system in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

To obtain a good start configuration in the early design phase, simulation tools are used to create a large number of product designs and to evaluate their performance. To reduce the effort for the model generation, analysis and evaluation, a design environment for thin-walled lightweight structures (DELiS) with the focus on structural mechanics of aircrafts has been developed.

Design/methodology/approach

The core of DELiS is a parametric model generator, which creates models of thin-walled lightweight structures for the aircraft preliminary design process. It is based on the common parametric aircraft configuration schema (CPACS), which is an abstract aircraft namespace. DELiS facilitates interfaces to several commercial and non-commercial finite element solvers and sizing tools.

Findings

The key principles and the advantages of the DELiS process are illustrated. Also, a convergence study of the finite element model of the wing and the fuselage and the result on the mass after the sizing process are shown. Due to the high flexibility of model generation with different levels of detail and the interface to the exchange database CPACS, DELiS is well suited to study the structural behaviour of different aircraft configurations in a multi-disciplinary design process.

Originality/value

The abstract definition of the object-oriented model allows several dimensions of variability, such as different fidelity levels, for the resulting structural model. Wings and fuselages can be interpreted as finite beam models, to calculate the global dynamic behaviour of a structure, or as finite shell models.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to perform a meta‐analysis of the literature comparing the environmental impacts of organic and conventional farming and linking these to differences in management practises. The studied environmental impacts are related to land use efficiency, organic matter content in the soil, nitrate and phosphate leaching to the water system, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity.

Design/methodology/approach

The theoretic framework uses the driver‐state‐response framework and literature data were analysed using meta‐analysis methodology. Meta‐analysis is the statistical analysis of multiple study results. Data were obtained by screening peer reviewed literature.

Findings

From the paper's meta‐analysis it can conclude that soils in organic farming systems have on average a higher content of organic matter. It can also conclude that organic farming contributes positively to agro‐biodiversity (breeds used by the farmers) and natural biodiversity (wild life). Concerning the impact of the organic farming system on nitrate and phosphorous leaching and greenhouse gas emissions the result of the analysis is not that straightforward. When expressed per production area organic farming scores better than conventional farming for these items. However, given the lower land use efficiency of organic farming in developed countries, this positive effect expressed per unit product is less pronounced or not present at all.

Original value

Given the recent growth of organic farming and the general perception that organic farming is more environment friendly than its conventional counterpart, it is interesting to explore whether it meets the alleged benefits. By combining several studies in one analysis, the technique of meta‐analysis is powerful and may allow the generation of more nuanced findings and the generalisation of those findings.
